Caring for Your Memorial Bench
We understand that your Memorial Bench is a deeply personal tribute and you want it to remain beautiful for generations to come. When your bench arrives it will be assembled, finely sanded and ready to take its place in your chosen spot. You might notice a very thin, clear coating on the arms and top as in warmer months, we apply a small amount of PVA glue to these areas. This simply helps the wood settle and prevents any slight movement at the ends of the grain. Rest assured this will naturally fade over time or you can gently sand it away if you prefer.
Should You Treat Your Teak Memorial Bench?
One of the most wonderful qualities of our best grade Teak is its remarkable durability. Thanks to its high levels of natural rubber and silica your bench is designed to remain outdoors all year round without rotting or splitting. We actually do not recommend treating your Memorial Bench with oils or varnishes. There's no need for extra work. Simply place it where you wish and enjoy a lifetime of memories. Over time your Teak Memorial Bench will gracefully transform into a beautiful silvery grey hue. This natural change is only on the surface and does not affect the bench's strength or longevity in any way. It's simply nature's way of protecting the wood.
Why Does Teak Turn Silver?
This silvery layer is Teak's natural defence mechanism. When exposed to the elements, the bare timber oxidises forming a protective layer. If you ever wish to reveal the warm original Teak colour, this layer can be gently sanded or carefully cleaned.
Should You Clean Your Teak Memorial Bench?
Yes, we do suggest giving your bench a gentle clean once a year to keep it looking its best. For this we highly recommend Barrettine Wood Reviver. In our extensive testing this product has consistently delivered excellent results. You can easily remove any lichen, algae, moss or other natural build up using a stiff bristled brush. Just dampen the surface of the bench, apply the cleaner and then gently scrub with the brush in the direction of the wood grain to loosen any dirt. Allow the product to soak for about 15 minutes, making sure it doesn't dry out completely, then rinse with clean water. For more stubborn or ingrained stains, a second application might be helpful. If your bench has become very weathered and a deep grey, a specialist treatment may be needed to bring back its original colour.
We hope this guidance helps you care for your beautiful Memorial Bench, ensuring it remains a cherished place of reflection for many years to come. If you have any questions concerning care or maintenance of Teak Memorial Benches, just get in touch 01580 201518
